Betsy Mallum is a composite character made of several accounts of real people devastatingly affected by Oxycontin. She is a coal miner who has dreams of moving to a more accepting town with her girlfriend Grace.
After an accident in the mines, Betsy is prescribed Oxycontin which eventually leads her down a spiral of opioid addiction and overdose.
