In life, Eleanor was a selfish, rude, and dishonest person who only ever cared about herself. After she died and was ‘misplaced’ in the Good Place, she tried to learn about ethics for self-preservation (not wanting to be sent to the Bad Place). Over time, she has come to better understand and accept her flaws in an attempt to become a truly good person.
