Ellie came into the hospital with headaches and ringing in her ears. She was told it was due to a buildup of fluid under her skull. They scheduled surgery to place a shunt to drain the fluid. Her wife, Joanne, was worried about residents doing her surgery, but Ellie told her they needed to learn and why shouldn't they learn on an old lady.
Ellie was taken into surgery, where Jackson Avery was supposed to place the shunt. However, he made an error, forcing Derek Shepherd to step in to finish the surgery. After surgery, she was awake and talking to Joanne. She told the doctors the ringing had stopped.
