Called Ofglen, she is Offred’s (the main concubine and protagonist) companion. She had a wife and child before the world changed, both of whom escaped to Canada. Ofglen was held back in the US because her marriage was rendered illegal in the new regime.
After being caught having an affair with a Martha, she undergoes genital mutilation to ‘cure’ her homosexuality. She steals a car and runs over a guard before presumably being shot and killed. However, Emily was captured and sent to the Colonies, an uninhabitable toxic wasteland where Gilead sends its “Unwomen.”
