The youngest child of John and Moira Barton, he moved to Emmerdale with them whilst still a student. Born Hannah, his first years in the village were filled with bullying, drugs, and many emotional issues. He ditched her A-Levels and moved with his sister to London in 2012. In 2018, he returned as Matty, attempting to steal his birth certificate so he could legally change his name and gender. While he initially fought with his mother about it, they reconciled and he moved home to Emmerdale.
