She rebels against the totalitarian system under which she is forced to live. Before the movie, she and Offred were best friends. After, she's listed as a Martha (an infertile older woman who is a servant). Offred thinks she's dead in the 3rd episode, but later she discovers she's become a prostitute at Jezebel's.
