Originally introduced as one of Agnes’s classmates and closest friends, Becka Grove gradually becomes one of the most tragic figures in the series. Raised within the rigid social hierarchy of Gilead, Becka struggles with expectations surrounding marriage, sexuality, and obedience.
Becka kills her father, Richard Grove, after discovering his ongoing sexual abuse of girls under his care. She is arrested by the Eyes and nearly executed before her mother falsely confesses to the murder in order to save her. Following her release, Becka is married to Garth Chapin after his promotion to Commander.
