Overview

While incredibly famous for showing us Dennis Franz’s ass, NYPD Blue was pretty edgy for it’s time. Not only did they have lesbians, they were fleshed out characters. Of course one died, but on this show that was pretty standard.

Queer Plotline Timeline

In season four, uniform officer Abby becomes friend with Greg, eventually asking him to be her sperm donor so Abby and her partner Kathy could have a child. Greg was unsure about this, but eventually did make a donation and Abby did get pregnant. In Season five, Kathy was murdered during a fake robbery that was set up by her bitter ex-lover, and Abby resolved to be a single mother, with Greg promising he would be there to help her if she needed him.

Notable Queer-Centric Episodes

“A Whole In Juan” – A baby is left with a transexual prostitute. The baby dies when left alone so the transsexual can go to a doctor’s for a checkup on her post-op.
“Dirty Laundry” – Det. Adrienne Lesniak lies about being a lesbian to get a fellow coworker to stop hitting on her. Later they date, she gets super clingy, and leaves the show.
“Thumb Enchanted Evening” – Lt. Dalto is a no-nonsense, by-the-book, ball buster, whom no one likes. She leaves in the next episode.
