Overview

Everyone’s favorite TV trope! Baby switching. This time, it’s two teenagers who were switched at birth and grew up in very different environments: Bay in an affluent suburb, and Daphne in working-class neighborhood with a single mother. Bay is also hearing and Daphne is Deaf.

When blood testing in school shows one of the girls’ blood type is incompatible with her parents, this long-held secret is revealed. The series follows the girls dealing with learning the truth, getting to know their biological families and Bay’s family learning ASL to best communicate with Daphne.

Queer Plotline Timeline

In the second episode of season two, Bay start as new student at the Carlton School for Deaf where she meets Natalie. Natalie hates her at first, but eventually they become friends. Natalie makes occasional appearances on the show throughout the rest of its run.

Notable Queer-Centric Episodes

  • Season 2 Episode 6 “Human/Need/Desire” – While Bay and Natalie are selling roses for fundraiser, Natalie reveals that she is interested in a girl.
  • Season 3 Episode 20 “Girl on the Cliff” – When Natalie and her girlfriend, Hilary, run for Prom King and Queen, the school enacts a dress code that boys must wear tuxedos and all girls must wear dresses to Prom. In protest Bay, Natalie and Mary Beth all wear tuxes and they are all turned away. Bay, Emmett, Mary Beth, Travis, Natalie and Hilary then decide to have an outside prom.
