Overview
Based on one of the longest running mangas in Shonen Jump, the story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” in order to become the next Pirate King.
In Japan, One Piece has consistently been among the top five animated shows in television viewer ratings.
Both the manga and the anime have been called out for overly sexualizing female characters, muddled (and offensive) representation of transgender characters, and much of that is content is regretted by the creator, Oda Sensei. That said, he did not remove it.
Queer Plotline Timeline
The world of One Piece is populated by a variety of people, including the okama, introduced in episode 78.
Okama are people who were born male but have adopted various female traits, ranging from simply crossdressing to actually changing their biological sex. The Kamabakka Kingdom is the okama kingdom, although okama live all over the world.
