Pose explores the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in the New York Ball culture world, beginning in the 1980s.
The show centers around Blanca who forms her own house, a self-selected family that provides support to LGBTQ youth who have been rejected by their birth families. They compete in the balls where opposing house members challenge each other in various categories and are judged on their outfits, attitude, or dance skills. Blanca’s former house mother, Elektra is her main competitor.
Pray Tell is the MC of the Balls and Godfather to the children who compete. Angel is one of Blanca’s children and a sexworker who develops feelings for a new client, Stan. A suburban cis white man who has children and a wife named Patty.
