The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week – February 14, 2022

On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, the Batwoman break gives me a chance to write about some of the other shows I’ve been watching like American Auto and Single Drunk Female.

Warning: This post contains spoilers!
American Auto – Season 1 Episode 6 “Commercial” [Live]

American Auto doesn’t have any non-cis male main or recurring queer characters and the ones who could count as guests didn’t have names and some didn’t have lines either (criteria for database inclusion), but this episode was hilarious. It’s recommended watching even as a stand-alone episode.

News comes out of a 2-mom household being turned away from a family roller skating day somewhere in middle America, and as a major car company, Payne Motors feels the need to take a stand. Thus, they decide to take the bold move of tweeting a rainbow square of support.

American Auto - Rainbow Square Tweet

The next day a teenager on TikTok calls them out for tweeting the square when all of their commercials only feature heteronormative families.

They decide to re-shoot the end of the commercial to make things right.

On the day of the shoot CEO Katherine Hastings is worried the actors playing the gay couple may not look lesbian enough.

American Auto - Do they look like lesbians?

Sadie goes to the costumer to see if she can make them look gayer.

After learning one of the actors may be straight they try to do a last-minute recast.

Things generally keep spiraling from there and it’s pretty funny. I won’t give it all away, you should check it out for yourself.

How I Met Your Father – Season 1 Episode 4 “Dirty Thirty” [Streaming]

It’s super basic of me, but I LOVED How I Met Your Mother. I was happy to hear they were doing a revival and watched it as soon as it dropped on Hulu.

How can I say this as nicely as possible…in my personal opinion, it’s not good.

Here are the things I like: Kim Cattrall plays the mother and narrator and her younger self as the new Ted is a good gender flip. Like a lot of other revival shows, this iteration is trying to do better with a more diverse cast and less sexual harassment (*cough* Barney). Also, there is a lesbian main character named Ellen played by out lesbian actor Tien Tran.

How I met your father - Holly

Ya’ll, I really want to like it, but IMO it falls flat of the more organic comedy chemistry of HIMYM. I feel the show is trying too hard and the characters are written in a robotic cliche manner. They are trying to create friend in-jokes and sayings like the original show, but it feels very forced.

All that being said, I’ll keep watching because I’m stubborn and my fingers are crossed it will get better. All the ingredients are there, the writers just need to chill out and let the show evolve into its own thing.

Single Drunk Female – Season 1 Episode 4 “Shamrocks and Shenanigans” [Streaming]

Single Drunk Female is a new series on Freeform about 20-something Samantha Fink navigating sobriety after losing her job and moving back in with her mother. My wife and I like the show a lot and there’s a cast of funny queer recurring characters including Sam’s sponsor Olivia and her wife.

And Mindy, Sam’s co-worker who is more experienced in navigating post-drinking life.

The show feels like there are queers in the writing room — the jokes are for us not about us.

It’s a funny and interesting take on sobriety and I recommend y’all give it a try.

This week: It’s week two of our Bat-break and I’ll let you all know where our favorite queer teen love triangle ended up on the Our Kind of People finale.

About Tracy Levesque

America's favorite biracial, TV obsessed lesbian. Tracy will watch almost any show with queer female characters and has a lot to say about it. She is happy to have joined queer WordPress superpowers with Mika to build this site. She lives with her wife and kid in Philly.
