Queerest Things - Girls5eva and We Are Lady Parts

On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, Peacock dropped two comedies about all-women bands — Girls5eva and We Are Lady Parts. Both are great and have queer characters.

There was a lot of positive buzz around Girls5eva and We Are Lady Parts on the LezWatch Slack so I decided to give them a watch. I am very glad I did because I loved them both!

Warning: This post contains spoilers!
Girls5eva – Season 1 [Streaming]

Girls5eva is about a 90s one-hit-wonder girl band that reunites after a popular hip hop artist samples one of their songs. The members are now in their 40s (minus one who died) and at different stages of life trying to navigate being a band again.

The show is so funny. My favorite part is watching Sara Bareilles (super successful musician who wrote an entire Broadway Musical), Busy Philipps (actor who can sing), Paula Pell (comedy writer and actor who can sing) and Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica fucking Schuyler in Hamilton!) all pretend to be bad at singing and songwriting.

Gloria McManus (played by out lesbian Paula Pell) is the gay one and she is so funny.

“Love doesn’t always win.” made me laugh.

Also, the songs — the official Girls5eva ones and the ones written into the plot — are all so hilarious.

If you like 90s nostalgia, musical parodies and watching Broadway-caliber musical artists pretend to be bad at performing, watch Girls5eva. You won’t be disappointed, plus it was renewed for a second season!

We Are Lady Parts – Season 1 [Streaming]

We Are Lady Parts is about an all-women, all-Muslim punk band in search of a new lead guitarist. They find Amina, a super talented guitar player who is also very shy and suffers from puke-inducing stage fright. She has a lot of conflict between wanting to be a traditional married Muslim woman and letting her inner Riot Grrl out.

I spent a lot of time being in bands and I’ve been to countless Queercore and Riot Grrl shows so I strongly related to the band scene part of the show.

The show is mostly about Amina’s journey and general band struggles, but Ayesha the drummer is queer and falls for a social media influencer.

I really enjoyed the series and would totally wear a Lady Parts t-shirt if they existed.

Girls5eva and We Are Lady Parts share a lot of things in common and are totally different at the same time! If you’re looking for a couple of delightful quick binges, these two shows are perfect.

This week: FOUR MORE SLEEPS until Atypical season four!!
