Today being Christmas is not going to stop me from posting The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week! Even though last week was a pre-holiday week, I have a lot to report on.
- Legends of Tomorrow – Season 3 Episode 9 “Beebo the God of War” [Catch up]
It’s taken me a long time, but I am finally all caught up on Legends, and I was able to see what #Avalance was all about!
I thought this episode was hilarious. A young Stein brings a Beebo toy (it’s like a Tickle Me Elmo) back to the time Vikings inhabited North America and messes up Christmas. The Legends need to fix this, and Time Bureau agent, Ava Sharpe, disobeys orders to go help them. Ava of course had a contentious relationship with Sara Lance at the beginning of the season, but now they are warming up to each other.
Sara did her patented “Oh, you’re not straight” smirk during a Viking dinner.
After their Christmas-saving adventure is over, Ava tells Sara she is going to report back to the Bureau.
During the big, Crisis on Earth-X crossover it was mentioned that there is someone out there for Sara “for more than a night.” Also, producers confirmed Sara would be settling down and getting into a relationship with someone in season 3. Caity Lotz herself says she’d like to see Sara have “not just a fling but like a real love relationship.”
I can’t wait to see what happens when Legends comes back from mid-season break. It’ll be a nice post-Sanvers distraction.
- Fresh Off the Boat – Season 4 Episode 10 “Do You Hear What I Hear?” [Catch up]
On a very special holiday episode of Fresh Off the Boat, Nichole gets the phone number of the cute barista she has a crush on.
Meeting a girl at a cafe is 90s realness.
- Runaways – Season 1 Episode 6 “Metamorphosis” [Catch up]
Karolina had an almost coming out moment before her and Nico were interrupted by friends.
Instead of coming out she had a drunk awkward kiss with Chase after falling off a roof and turning into a rainbow. I know it took awhile for Karolina to have her coming out arc in the comics, but can it be a little accelerated for TV? I want to fast forward to the gay part.
- Brooklyn Nine-Nine – Season 5 Episode 10 “Game Night” [Random]
Like Mika, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is show I’ve enjoyed the times I watched it, but I don’t watch it on the regular. But now that Rosa Diaz came out, I had to watch those episodes. In this episode she comes out to her co-workers and eventually her parents.
There are a lot of funny lines in this episode.
Like when Boyle is the only one who knows, and he’s trying not to spill the beans.
And after Rosa comes out to everyone and tells them, they’re allowed a brief moment of questions.
Props to Brooklyn Nine-Nine for the positive bi rep! I hope we get to meet the girlfriend soon.
- Godless – All of Season 1 [Binge Watch]
My wife listened to a Fresh Air interview with the creator of Godless and was intrigued. We also learned Merritt Wever would be playing a queer character on the show so we decided to give it a watch.
Two episodes in we were ready to quit. The show takes place in the town of La Belle, where the population is mostly comprised of women due to a mining accident that wiped out nearly all the local men. This could have been an opportunity to have a Western with a unique and original concept, but no. Most of the plot and screen time is devoted to the male characters, and there is a lot rape, gratuitous and disrespectful female nudity (and none for the men), and gruesome violence.
We wound up sticking it out for Merritt Wever’s character, Mary Agnes “Maggie” McNue and her girlfriend, town teacher (and former prostitute) Callie Dunne. Maggie’s husband was the town Mayor who died in the mining accident. Since then Maggie has chosen to dress in drag and try to (unsuccessfully) help the women wield their power in town.
Maggie and Callie have two crumbs of cute moments. Like when Callie is recalling their meet-cute.
But they spend most of the season in a Three’s Company type misunderstanding. Maggie thinks Callie is sleeping with Martha, the town painter. But, no! Callie was actually having Martha paint a picture of her that she was going to give Maggie as a present.
They air a lot of their dyke drama in the street.
They eventually make up (cute moment number two).
We stubbornly made it through the whole season, and while I can say no fictitious lesbians were killed in the making of the show, it was still not worth it. I took one for the team to let you know if you’re considering watching the show for the queer, don’t bother.

Wielding a flashlight Ali. And my number one favorite:
Arms crossed, dressed in all black and wearing a badge Ali. That one definitely made me gayer than I was before I watched it. It also helped scrub Godless from my brain.
