On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, I’m still spinning my wheels over just what the heck happened on “A Single Pale Rose,” and I fall in love with RED, the Brazilian web series.

Ever since the last episode of Steven Universe, I have talking to anyone who will listen about what the heck actually happened.
Up until now, we’ve been led to believe Rose shattered Pink Diamond, except during “The Trial” where there was evidence that Rose may not have shattered her. Whenever Steven brought the topic up with Pearl, she got all freaked out and weird. In this episode Steven does it again. Pearl gets weird again but then sends him into her gem to go find her phone.
Journeying into Pearl’s head was trippy enough, but he goes deep into Pearl’s subconscious all the way to the memory of Pink Diamond’s shattering. Steven watches it all go down.
Ok, so Rose proposes a radical plan to Pearl — a plan that will change everything. Also Pearl mentions Rose’s status and her purpose. What is that supposed to mean?
Whatever the plan is, it’ll give Rose and Pearl the freedom to live together on Earth. This is still in line with Rose shattering Pink Diamond — is that the plan?
This scene is so cute, but what does she mean by “I can’t exactly shatter myself.”
O.M.G. ROSE IS PINK DIAMOND and PEARL WAS HER PEARL. That means Steven is half diamond. This can be the reason for Steven’s uncontrollable crying when he found the palanquin back in season 4. Pink invented the whole Rose persona so she could be a regular gem and not a Diamond.
Pink Diamond walks outside and grabs a handful of dirt and a single flower. Pearl takes the flower and Pink crushes the dirt into diamond shards.
This part I’m really stuck on, why did Pink eat the shards?
Before the shattering, Pink gives Pearl one last command — she can never speak of this again. This is why Pearl got so weird whenever Steven asked her about it.
Subconsciousness Pearl then hands Steven the phone, and right before he zaps back to reality, we see the shattering. I slowed it down so we can see what exactly happened.
Okay…Pearl morphs into Rose then pretends to shatter Pink Diamond. Did Pink poof away right before the moment Pearl as Rose would have shattered her for real? After she poofed did the fake shards remain (because gems don’t actually eat) as fake evidence? Pearl as Rose had the pink diamond in her hand after the fake shattering, where is it now? They went to the trouble of faking Pink’s death, but who was there to witness it?
I have so many questions.
This new development allows for a lot of interesting stories. Like, will we get the backstory on Pink Diamond and Pearl’s relationship, and how Pink came up with the Rose persona? What does it mean for Steven to be half diamond?
Also, thanks for the major cliffhanger! We have to wait until Summer for more episodes.
- RED – Season 2 Episode 5 “Sensações” [Web]
RED is a series I heard a lot about and had on my to-watch list. The actresses who play the two main characters were at ClexaCon, and I was impressed by how great they were with fans. Then Nikki and Erica from the Harold They’re Lesbians Podcast talked about how much they loved it so I put it at the top of my list.
I started watching and was hooked instantly.
OMG, the two main characters, played by Luciana Bollina and Ana Paula, Lima have AMAZING chemistry.
I can’t even handle it.
I don’t want to give too much away because I want you all to watch! The first 3 seasons are all on Vimeo and now is the perfect time to binge because season 4 is coming out on May 22 for pay or you can watch free, an episode a week starting June 12.

At the time of this post’s publication, I will be on a plane to CA. I am going to be at a business conference all week, so I don’t know how much TV I will be able to watch. However, I will do my best to get it in.
