Queerest Things - Cheryl and Toni on Riverdale

On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, I talk about the hot mess that is Cheryl and Toni on Riverdale; Freya makes a guest appearance on Legacies; and Amanda and Edie say those three words to each other on Almost Family.

Warning: This post contains spoilers!
Black Lightning – Season 3 Episode 6 “The Book of Resistance: Chapter One” [Live]

Anissa spent most of this episode poisoned and sick.

The whole thing was strange. I feel the show is trying to get back on track with Anissa and Grace, but it doesn’t know what it’s doing. Anissa spent the first half of the episode hiding being on death’s door and acting like it was no big deal to Grace (even after Grace discovers her passed out on the floor).

Grace is like, “You’re good? Cool, I’m going to take a shower. Call me if you need me.”

I rarely get sick, but when I do, my wife knows and she is really sweet about taking care of me. She’s not like, “If you need me you know where to find me.”

When things got really bad Gambi had to step in.

Black Lightning - What is hapening to her

We did get this moment of Thundergrace cuteness, but it was only after Gambi left and gave Grace orders to watch over Anissa.

Our community wants to see girlfriends taking care of each other without a dude having to step in and provide instructions.

I do love this show and appreciate all the queerness included in it, but I feel it’s still not hitting the mark. We don’t know a ton about Grace’s past relative to all the other characters on this show, and key moments (like Anissa coming out as Thunder/Black Bird to Grace) all happen off-screen.

Every week I watch the show hoping it’s going to get better, but at this point, I think this may be as good as it gets for our ship. I hope I am wrong, but I am self-protectingly not getting my hopes up.

This is Us – Season 4 Episode 9 “So Long, Marianne” [Live]

It’s a very special Thanksgiving episode of This is Us, and Tess is buggin’ over a “Who is your celebrity crush” meme that’s going around school. Tess isn’t out to anyone at her new school yet, and she is scared to post that Zendaya (Beth: “Spiderman Zendaya or HBO Zendaya?”) is her crush.

For some reason, she confides in Kevin (I get he has evolved, but still — most annoying character on the show IMO) about the meme and he encourages her to post the truth.

This is Us - Zendaya

After she does it, she excitedly runs down to show Kevin the positive feedback she got from the post.

This is Us - Your daughter came out on Instagram today

That was cute, and I’m very happy for Tess. But I’m telling y’all, in any Philly public school a Councilperson would send their kid to, this would probably not be a big deal.

I’ll put my cynical Philadelphian self aside and applaud the show’s cute coming out arc for Tess. Now, I want her to find a posse of queer friends.

Almost Family – Season 1 Episode 5 “Risky AF” [Live]

Last week Edie maneuvered her way out of going to DC for her grandmother-in-law’s 80th birthday party, leaving her alone in NYC for the weekend.

While waiting for Amanda at the DA’s office, Edie hits it off with a kid practicing for a mock trial. That kid, Lorenzo, turns out to be Amanda’s son from a former marriage!

I guess that’s what Amanda meant by “lesbians have kids too.”

Now, instead of spending the weekend in DC, Edie is going to be at Amanda’s apartment helping her kid practice. Mock trial prep goes well and the kid kills it.

Almost Family - Amanda and Edie hold hands

I love a stealth hand-hold.

Later, Edie comes by Amanda’s apartment to give Lorenzo an owl stuffie for doing so well, but Amanda is not in the mood to celebrate. She’s done participating in Edie’s double life.

You can’t go back after saying the L-word.

Edie arrives at her house to find Tim has come home early. Uh, oh! Tim confronts her about not being in the office working all weekend like she said she was. Edie lies and said she was out blowing off steam with friends because the baby stuff was getting to her. Tim doesn’t buy it and that is where we end this episode.

Edie needs to come clean and face the inevitable life blow-up she’s been avoiding. Maybe that’ll happen during the 2-night Thanksgiving special! Thanksgiving is the perfect time to drop a bomb like this.

Riverdale – Season 4 Episode 7 “Chapter Sixty-Four: The Ice Storm” [Live]

Y’all. I can’t with Cheryl and Toni on Riverdale this season. An exhumed dead brother and a creepy doll are just two of the ridiculous, over-the-top things going on with this couple. I do not have the energy to recap this madness.

But here was a cute moment.

I’ll let Madelaine recap this season so far.

Legacies – Season 2 Episode 6 “That’s Nothing I Had to Remember” [Live]

I am disappointed with the straightwashing this show and Charmed have gone through in their newest seasons. Penelope is gone and now Josie is with Landon?? I’m sorry Landon, but you are the oatmealy-ist character on the show and the two of them feel very thrown together.

An exciting thing did happen in this episode though! Josie needed a super-powered spell from a Michaelson witch, so she went to New Orleans to find Hope’s Aunt Freya!

Freya is from The Originals, which Legacies is a spin-off of. At the end of The Originals she and her girlfriend, Keelin got married. And in her conversations with Josie, we learn not only are they still married, but they also have a kid!

It was a treat to see Freya again and I love two cross-generational bisexual characters meeting each other from related shows!

Thanksgiving is usually a quiet TV week here in the US, but Almost Family has blessed us with a 2 night Thanksgiving special! I can’t wait to see the drama go down during that dinner!

I feel out of all of these pairings , amandie is the strongest story wise… maybe it’s the angst etc and edie very likely falling in love for the first time… yes unfortunately it’s the usual cheating trope but what to do… I really hope the show picks up in numbers so we can get a second season…

I’m annoyed they don’t have Penelope any more … charmed just I don’t even know what to say what they did ..

    • I agree with everything you said. I think Amandie works so well because the actors have amazing chemistry. It is unfortunate their storyline falls into a cheating trope, but people coming out later in life while in a relationship happens all the time. I feel it’s a legitimate story to be told. Or maybe I’m rationalizing because I love them so much. 😄
