On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, it’s been a very quiet week of queer TV, but the Derry Girls wee lesbian episode made up for it.
- Derry Girls – Season 1 Episode 6 “Episode Six” [Streaming]

It’s the calm before all of the regular shows return, and on this little vacation I binge-watched Derry Girls. I loved the show and found it absolutely hilarious.
It’s about a group of teenage friends attending an all-girls Catholic school in Derry, Northern Ireland. It’s set in the 90s, so there’s a nostalgia porn element. The unique thing about the show is it takes place during the Catholic/Protestant conflict. I embarrassingly know little about this history, but I’m impressed by the show’s ability to pull off a clever comedy in the middle of that crisis.
The humor is quick-witted, and the comedic timing and acting is so good. I have to admit, I needed to watch with the captions on and Google some terms I didn’t understand (i.e. Wain, pronounced “way-in”), because of the Irish accents and slang.
In this episode, Erin (the lead character) becomes the new editor of the school newspaper, and while desperate for a decent story to publish, raids the “Searching for Myself” writing contest entries, and finds a student coming out story.
She publishes the article as “The Secret Life of a Lesbian” – despite head nun Sister Michael forbidding her to.
The dialogue on this episode had me laughing out loud.
I won’t give it away since it’s the finale episode of season 1, but we do find out who the Derry Girls wee lesbian is.
This week — Grey’s and Riverdale are back, but unfortunately I don’t have high hopes for queer female or trans content for either one of them.
