Now that the strikes are behind us (for now…), new shows are dropping in to entertain us through the long, cold Spring and Summer.
For me that means two shows I love, despite their flaws, are coming back!
Girls5Eva

This silly little hit on Peacock was unceremoniously dumped and ‘saved’ by Netflix. A sweet show about a late ’90s pop girl-group (we had a million) who got sampled by a rapper and suddenly found themselves, dare we say it, popular again?
But they’re not ingenues anymore and the road is very different at 40 than 20.
The members of the late ‘90s girl-group Girls5eva – Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria – have reunited and recorded a new album, Returnity, so it’s time for the next logical step: a comeback tour. With no plan, tour manager, or venues secured, the ladies pile into a van and hit the great unknown, doing their damnedest to promote their album and get back on top. In the process, Girls5eva will grapple with life on the road, see their relationships tested, play a billionaire’s birthday party, sow their oats, confront parents they believe held them back, cross paths with the biggest pop star on the planet, and question if they really want “the big time” again. Will Girls5eva fast-track their comeback and sell their tour documentary in the process? Or will the road destroy them?
Personally I wonder if their fifth girl is, in fact, really dead.
The girls are back on March 14th.
The Umbrella Academy

I won’t deny this show is all over the damn place. I rarely have any idea what’s going on, and frankly I’m okay with that. Time Travel, suitcases, meeting yourself, killing Kennedy, birth, death, babies, and a transition? It’s wild and wooly and just the way I like it.
While Season 1 was, for many people, an oddity, season 2 gave us queer Vanya, who then got even queerer in season 3 when the show chose to honor Elliot Page’s transition by having Vanya transition as well to Viktor. Side note: amusing me, Vanya’s a gender neutral name like my own (depending on where you’re from).
From the promo image (see below) we have Viktor in an Umbrella Academy uniform, but also in jeans and boots with an umbrella. What does all that mean? Are the universes merged now? Are they all in the new group? Is Viktor finally included!?
We don’t know a whole lot about it yet, but we do know The Umbrella Academy will be back August 4, 2024, so set your time travel calculations and don’t be like Five and miss out.
