Batwoman is Ruby Rose

Batwoman is Ruby Rose

Or Ruby Rose is the CW’s new Batwoman.

The news broke yesterday with TVLine and many others reporting on the Hollywood back chatter. It was confirmed by EP Caroline Dries shortly thereafter on Twitter:

Immediate reactions have been mixed. Yes, Rose has been out since she was 12 years old, but some people feel she was an ‘easy’ choice being a popular Hollywood actress at the moment. The internet can be a harsh place some times. Rose is an experienced actress. At the same time, there was absolutely no pick that was going to please everyone.

There’s a tremendous amount of pressure on Rose, and the CW, to succeed here. It’s important to recognize too that casting on any show really shouldn’t be just for fan-service. There are many more aspects that go into casting, including availability and the goals of a show. There’s also a need for things to gel properly with the cast.

The current logline for Batwoman reads as follows:

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope. Based on the characters from DC.

Love it or hate it, Rose’s casting marks the CW’s second out actress playing a queer character, following Nicole Maines being cast on Supergirl as a series regular next season.

It’s been a day. What are your thoughts about the casting of Batwoman? Have they changed? Do you think this is a good, bad, or mediocre choice? Let us know!
