On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, I finally get to add the character Nia from Superstore to the site and we find out what happened to Choni after the Riverdale time jump.

- Superstore – Season 6 Episode 8 “Ground Rules” [Catch-up]
-
Superstore is a show I watch with my family. I love it and think it’s hilarious and clever, but for 6 years I’ve been hoping for a queer female, transgender or nonbinary character to appear so I can add it to our site. A couple weeks ago that finally happened.
I’m thrilled Nia is a recurring character, but she just started this season and it’s Superstore‘s final. Womp. I personally think the show could have gone on for longer. I hope Nia gets decent screentime on the rest of Superstore‘s run.
An unrelated queer aside: Doesn’t Jonah look like a straight version of Denali (out of drag) from this season of Ru Paul’s drag race?
We call her “Gay Jonah” while we’re watching the show.
- Riverdale – Season 5 Episode 4 “Chapter Eighty: Purgatorio” [Live]
-
The moment is here! We find out what happened to the Riverdale gang seven years after graduating high school.
Because of an injury, the Army sends Archie back to Riverdale to lead the ROTC program there. When he arrives back in town, he discovers the Serpents opened a bar under Pop’s called White Wyrm. On stage are some of his old Riverdale classmates including a very pregnant Toni.
Toni sits down with Archie and explains why Riverdale has devolved into a wasteland since he left. The short story is Hiram Lodge ruined the town. No surprise there. She also gives him a rundown on her life over the past 7 years.
- She graduated from Highsmith college with honors.
- She lives with Kevin and Fangs (they’re still together — cute).
- She and the other Serpents pooled their money together to open White Wyrm.
- Yes, she’s pregnant, but she’s not ready to reveal the bio father yet.
And finally, the million-dollar question: What happened to her and Cheryl?
Cheryl broke up with Toni after graduation to make things right between their families. But since then it looks like Cheryl hasn’t left Thornhill.
Cheryl has turned into a sadly-painting agoraphobe. Toni stayed persistent in checking in on her though.
Seven years later, Toni makes it clear her family is totally cool with her and Cheryl dating. I guess Cheryl did put the work in to fix her ancestors’ wrongdoings. But even though it’s good enough for Toni’s Nana it’s not good enough for her. She’s punished herself to life at Thornhill unhappily rearranging the furniture for the rest of her days.
If Toni had the persistence to stick it out with Cheryl while she kept her dead twin brother in the house I’m confident she’ll be able to get through to her.
Toni has pivoted to a more central character and I love that. She has been by Cheryl’s side for years without much of a life of her own. Also, I like the time jump! It’s like the show has been reset with a more tangible “Save the town of Riverdale” plot vs. whatever the heck has been going on for the past 4+ seasons. I’m in!
This week: Black Lightning is back, but can Grace come out of her coma, please? Also, Good Trouble season three starts on Wednesday! I’m looking forward to seeing what’s going on at The Coterie.
