New Feature: Calendar

New Feature: Calendar

So you’re stuck at home, like everyone else, and you think there are only reruns? Guess what! There are still new episodes of shows with postive queer rep coming to your home nearly every week, at least for a while, so you should make a date night of it and check out some shows.

What’s Included

It’s hard to keep up with everything that’s on TV. Peak TV or not, we have around 270 shows on air right now that have at least one queer female, non-binary, and/or transgender character on them! Of course, not all of those are shows worth watching. For the queers at least. I mean, who wants to watch every Law & Order: SVU just in case there might be a queer plot line?

But on the other hand, you really do want to know when the next Motherland: Fort Salem might be on. Basically you want to know what shows you can dial into and have a nice queer-tv and chill, right?

To help you out, we’ve created a calendar but it’s more than just a calendar.

Okay, yes, it’s a Calendar

You can go to our calendar page and see this week’s new shows (not reruns). The list is a top-down, Sunday through Saturday list of the shows on air. Every show has a link back to the show page, so you can make sure that’s what you were looking for.

We made sure to highlight ‘today’ for you:

All times are US/ET relative, so 3pm ET is 8pm London for you EastEnders fans. I’m working on making it so you can change your timezone, but the drama of US shows airing different times in different timezones sometimes has been a headache.

You can navigate forward and backward, so if you wanted to look at next week, click that button at the bottom of the page!

It’s also for shows…

Once we had all that written in, we wanted to add in something extra. Like if you just wanted to know when the next episode of Motherland was, you could go to the Motherland: Fort Salem page and look on the sidebar:

We’re working out the kinks with shows that have non-alphanumeric characters in their names (like every Law & Order ever), but this should be working for most on-air shows.

And then there’s Alexa!

This is where it gets really fun!

If you use Amazon Alexa you should install our Alexa Skill. Once you to, you can tell your Echo or Dot “Alexa, ask LezWatchTV what’s on TV today.” That’s right! Your Alexa enabled device will list what’s on today for you. I’m working to improve that so you can ask about specific days, but sometimes Alexa doesn’t understand what I meant when I say “Alexa, ask LezWatchTV what’s on June 15th?” and there’s only so much screaming at it that my cat can tolerate.

There’s also a lot more sneaky cool stuff in our Alexa skill that we’re rolling out slowly, so if talking to your computer is your jam, we’ve got you covered. Like “Ask LezWatchTV what shows are like One Day at a Time?”

What Do You Want to See?

This is just a small start, we know. We’ve made our API (like everything else here) open to everyone, so if you’re interested in taking this code for your own work, or you want to hook in to us, read up on the What’s On API.

What are you looking for? What would make your life a little easier to figure out what shows to watch? Leave us a comment and let us know!

About Mika A. Epstein

Mika has been deep in fandom since she could say 'Trekkie.' With decades experience in running fansites, developing software, and organizing communities, she's taken on the challenge of delving into the recesses of television for queers long forgotten. Making this site with Tracy is nothing short of serendipity. Mika lives with her wife in Southern California. Of course she has a hybrid, but she'd rather ride her bicycle.
