On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, I catch up with Big Mouth, Debbie and Sandy drama on Shameless and I am already in love with Ryan and Angelique drama on Batwoman.

I’ve learned to avoid recapping superhero shows because I’m really bad at it. I don’t have the attention span for the superhero part, but I am here for the relationship drama and last week’s Batwoman brought it.
A local kid named Kevin Johnson goes missing and we learn about Ryan’s past because she was abducted in a similar way when she was his age. She was a foster kid who was abducted by the “Candy Lady.” A creepy woman who kidnapped foster kids from a neighborhood comic book shop and brainwashed them for 60 days into believing no one wanted them. After that, she’d sell them to neighborhood gangs. Ryan is sure Kevin is another one of her victims and there is no public effort to find him for racism reasons.
Ryan tells her kidnapping story to Mary. She was saved by Angelique, another girl at the foster home Ryan and Angelique were staying at. Angelique got herself kidnapped by the Candy Lady on purpose so she could rescue her. Oh, and she is also her ex-girlfriend.
With this news, Mary is like, “You have to call her! She may remember where the Candy Lady’s house is!”
Ryan reluctantly texts her, but she gets a “wrong number” message back.
Mary is able to figure out where the house is from the search effort for Beth which did happen because she’s a white girl from a wealthy family and Ryan remembered Beth’s search party stopping by the house. Ryan finds the house and the Candy Lady captures her again, but this time she breaks herself free and beats the shit out of the Candy Lady! Kevin’s 60 days were already up and she sold him to a local gang.
In another part of the show I don’t understand where Alice, Sophie and Luke live, Sophie is trying to find a dude named Ocean. This leads her to a sketchy building that looks like a meth lab. While she’s investigating a woman surprise attacks her.
Surprise woman runs off, but it looks like Sophie may know her.
Ryan saves Kevin from the gang and assures him people care about him and he matters. I’m one of the most cynical people on the planet and I found that scene to be really emotional. With the pivot from Kate Kane to Ryan Wilder, Batwoman has more freedom to take on real issues, and in my opinion, it makes the show more powerful overall.
At the end of the episode, Ryan and Angelique meet up after all.
Angelique is the surprise woman who attacked Sophie!
There are so many things to process here:
- Ryan and Angelique had great chemistry from the minute she walked in the door.
- Ryan went to jail for her hence the falling out.
- Angelique is still involved in criminal activity, how is that going to work if they resume a relationship?
- How does Sophie know her?
I enjoyed this episode so much and I know there was another one last night, but I don’t have enough time to do an entire recap for shows that air on Sundays.

Sophie’s face in that scene is priceless.
As queer fans, you know how we watch the “scenes from the next” and “previously on” to determine if there will be queer content on an episode? Usually, if they don’t show the queer character we know we’ll get nothing. I love how we don’t need to do that with this show because there are so many queer main characters! I love it and I’m here for the Ryan and Angelique drama!

Where were we? On the last episode of Shameless, Debbie realized she had no idea where Sandy worked or lived or the fact she had a car. After a paranoid day of tracking her around Chicago, Sandy avoided answering Debbie when she confronted her about where she’d been all day, but she does reveal she has a husband!
On this episode, Sandy isn’t answering Debbie’s 30 texts and she’s still mad about the husband thing. Terry, the evil patriarch of the Milkovich family, has been shot and Sandy has been dealing with him in the hospital. Being occupied with that is probably why she hasn’t responded to Debbie.
Debbie spends a lot of the episode complaining about Sandy to Ian and Mickey who don’t want to hear it.
Terry is released from the hospital and Sandy wheels his ass home. The Gallaghers and the Milkoviches are all there when he arrives. And even though it’s very obvious Sandy’s has her hands full, Debbie still uses this time to confront her about not answering her texts or explaining how she has a husband she didn’t know about.
Debbie quits in true Gallagher style and walks off.
It’s true Sandy has not been forthcoming with her life with Debbie, but you know it must have to do with her shit show of a family. I think Debbie is being completely unreasonable, but it’s on-brand.
Later, Debbie has a “Hot lesbian convict handywoman” job at a new queer bar that’s opening up in her neighborhood. The owner Calista wants her to put up their new sign.
After a job well done, Calista tells Debbie her ulterior motive in hiring her.
Oh, Debbie. I don’t even know what to say.
That night, Sandy is out in the yard and finally has a moment to talk to Debbie and tell her why she has a husband.
That scene was very sweet and they both said “I love you!”
For all of Shameless‘ Shamelessness, it has 23 characters and counting in our database. The show may be a hot mess, but it has brought the queer content over 11 seasons. We should start placing our bets on how many characters it will end up with by the finale.
- Big Mouth – Season 4 Episode 5 “A Very Special 9/11 Episode” [Catch Up]

I caught up on Big Mouth last week. It’s a show both my teenager and I watch, but NOT together. It’s half gross boy humor and half brilliant and funny. I love its bluntness when it comes to female sexuality and sexual and gender orientation. And I’m entertained by the show randomly making real-life people queer, like Duke Ellington’s piano teacher Marietta Clinkscales.
I was 2 seasons behind, so I had a lot of ground to cover.
Here are my favorite parts:
- Missy’s new Hormone Monstress, Mona, voiced by Emmy award-winning actress Thandie Newton (Maeve from Westworld)!
- Forever Kristen Wiig as Jessie’s talking vagina.
- The show’s first transgender character, Natalie, voiced by Josie Totah (Lexie from the Saved by the Bell reboot).
- Ali and Samira becoming girlfriends.
- And my very favorite new character — Lena, Missy’s cousin voiced by Lena Waithe.
I hope Lena becomes a more recurring character in the remaining seasons.
This week: I guess I didn’t make myself clear last week, can Grace come out of her coma AND be herself in human form? That’s what I would like to see on Black Lightning tonight.
