On this chapter of The Queerest Things I Watched Last Week, we were blessed with Kate Moennig on Grown-ish to help process Nomi’s straight girl issues; we met Gael’s sister Jazmin on Good Trouble; and I opted for RENT: Live over Supergirl and Charmed.
- Runaways – Season 2 Episode 12 “Earth Angel” [Streaming]
-
Karolina and Nico finally made up with a kiss and a hug after Karolina gave Nico a pep talk about embracing her dark side because that may be a source of her power.
Okay, maybe now they can get their relationship back on track. But then, the person who has been creeping around Karolina walks into Karolina’s room in Gert’s form. She shape-shifts back to herself, and we finally find out who she is. Her name is Xavin and she’s waited her entire life to be with Karolina.
Woah! I did not see that coming (probably because I didn’t read the comics). Well, this is going to be interesting.
- Good Trouble – Season 1 Episode 3 “Allies” [Live]
-
In this episode we met Gael’s sister, Jazmin, and she’s experiencing transphobia at her job and from their parents.
For the record, official LezWatch policy is the T is NOT optional.
- Grown-ish – Season 2 Episode 5 “Girls Like You” [Live]
-
Finally we got a Nomi-centric episode that passed the Bechdel Test. Zoey and Ana are having a problem with Nomi’s non-stop hookup parade leaving the apartment every morning.
When the girls talk to Nomi about it, they find out all of the women she’s banging are straight.
Nomi says it works out because women are curious in college, and she’s there to provide them that experience. Okay, it looks like we’ll be unpacking this for the rest of the episode.
Ana, being conservative, thinks Nomi is a monster and accuses her of being a misogynist. Zoey, on the other hand, is more diplomatic.
Nomi’s pals take various sides — why isn’t it okay for women to have sex for pleasure’s sake when men can? Why is Nomi only sleeping with straight women? Isn’t that just as bad as men who only target virgins to have sex with?
That night Zoey and Nomi hang out and Zoey witnesses Nomi working her magic with a random girl. When Nomi takes her home, Zoey urges her to tell the girl she’s going to ghost her after she sleeps with her. Nomi complies and tells the girl she’s not looking for anything serious, and she’s probably not going to call her ever. That seems to be just fine with her.
Later, Nomi tells Zoey she talked to the girl before hooking up, but for some reason, her saying she wasn’t going to take her home to meet her mom and dad messed her up. When the tables were turned, everything felt wrong.
To help her figure it out, Nomi went to her Gender Studies professor played by Shane, I mean, Kate Moennig!
It looks like Shane got to the bottom of it — Nomi only sleeps with straight girls to prevent a serious relationship from developing because she’s afraid to come out to her parents.
It looks like we’re going to get a “Nomi comes out to her parents” episode in the future.
- Grey’s Anatomy – Season 15 Episode 10 “Help, I’m Alive” [Live]
-
Not much has been happening with Casey or Taryn lately, but it was so cute when most of the queer characters were in a scene together helping Levi get his contacts in.
I love it when a show has enough queer characters for them to do a scene together, but I think Levi is super cute in his glasses! I hope he doesn’t get rid of them.
- Brooklyn Nine-Nine – Season 6 Episode 3 “The Tattler” [Live]
-
On this episode, we found out what happened to Rosa and Alicia (Gina Rodriguez).
That’s a bummer, I would have loved to see Rosa and Alicia as girlfriends, but I imagine Gina is too busy starring in a show, directing and being in movies. Slacker 😄.
- RENT: Live – [Live, kinda]
-
Last night I didn’t watch Supergirl or Charmed because my wife and child are RENTheads, so we watched RENT: Live instead.
I loved Kiersey Clemons as Joanne. Not only did she do an amazing job, it was also nice to have one of our favorite out queer actors playing a lesbian on TV.
The LiveNotLive thing was a little odd and not everyone’s voice was Broadway-quality, but my family and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Now I have to catch up on Supergirl and Charmed which means a double recap next week! Well, hopefully next week both of those shows will have queer content.
