Queer Beats – May 31, 2019

Queer Beats with Nikki Header

Welcome back to Queer Beats, your weekly one-stop shop for queer television news! This week, Abby’s was unfairly cancelled, Nicole Maines and Nafessa Williams graced the newest issue of The Advocate, and Queen Sugar dropped a new trailer!

Abby’s

This week, Abby’s was cancelled by NBC. Abby’s was a new sitcom featuring an out bisexual lead so it’s really heartbreaking to see it go.

The Bold Type

I don’t really have any major Bold Type news but I wanted an excuse to talk about my favorite, Adena, and her return… so here is Aisha talking about the last few episodes of this season:

Supergirl

Nicole Maines graces the cover of The Advocate next month and I love the photos already.

The issue also features Nafessa Williams from Black Lightning and focuses on queer superheroes!

Portlandia

I’m sure most of you already know this but Carrie Brownstein, one of the Portlandia leads, actually got her start in a Riot Grrrl band called Sleater-Kinney and they are about to release a new album! The first single is inherently queer as hell considering Carrie is queer, it was produced by St. Vincent (who is queer), and now Miranda July created the lyric video where she is flirting with Carrie. What could be better?

Queen Sugar

The new season of Queen Sugar is only a few weeks away and OWN finally dropped a Nova-centric trailer!

Vida

I hope you are all watching Vida. I’m binging slowly because I love it so much but I definitely think this season is even better than the first. This week, Mishel talked to Entertainment Tonight about her character, Emma:

And that’s it for Queer Beats this week! Always thorough, always professional, never random.

About NikkiT

Nikki is an archivist by day, queer TV addict by night. Her first dive into fan content was when she ran a secret Xanga blog dedicated to pictures of Lorelai Gilmore in the 7th grade. She has never looked back.
