Welcome to Queer Beats, your weekly one-stop shop for queer television news! This week, we finally get a glimpse of Batwoman, the Legends meet a unicorn, and Emily Andras cares if you stay.
Batwoman
Along with much of the queer fandom, I am beyond excited to see the introduction of Batwoman into the Arrowverse during December’s crossover episode. Naturally, I cling onto every sneak peek we are blessed with. That’s why I was pumped to see the debut of Batwoman’s suit last week:
Where can I find one in my size?
Plus, the crossover is currently being filmed and we are getting additional glorious teasers including this picture from Ruby Rose:
Black Lightning
Black Lightning recently started back up and this season is really looking promising. Nafessa Williams (Anissa Pierce/Thunder) was looking good at Atlanta Pride this past weekend.
Haunting of Hill House
Look, I have to be honest, I can’t watch scary movies/TV shows. I essentially refuse to go near them because I LIKE TO SLEEP. Sue me. But I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that this new Netflix show has a queer lady and I heard she’s treated well. That being said, definitely check that out if being terrified is your thing! *insert judging side eye here*
Legends of Tomorrow
LEGENDS IS ALMOST BACK, Y’ALL!!! And they have been blessing us with sweet, sweet content in the week leading up to their premiere.
First, here’s Ava’s birthday cake (which was posted to celebrate Brandon Routh’s birthday)
Then, we got an extended promo for the premiere which was full of murderous unicorns, fairy godmothers, and (most importantly) AvaLance kisses!
As we all know, Legends is not going to be included in the Arrowverse crossover this year (We were robbed of perfect Sara/Kate Kane interactions but whatever). So, in typical Legends fashion, they put out their own trailer and talked about their own plans in this TV Line article.
Finally, Caity Lotz (Sara Lance), Jes Macallan (Ava Sharpe), and Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer) attended Fan Expo Vancouver this weekend and gave us lots of good AvaLance content. My personal favorite moment was when Jes got jealous over any potential interaction between Sara and Batwoman.
RED
Everyone should know that I love me some Red. Red wine, red nail polish, and especially RED the web series. RED, a Brazilian series that everyone should be watching, recently announced that it will have its first mini-con in Los Angeles in February.
Supergirl
Let’s get one thing out of the way: I love Chyler Leigh. Which does not make me unique because she is one of the most beloved actresses in the queer wlw collective fandom (let’s not even speak about her Clexacon 2018 panel). So I love when other people get a chance to speak about how great she is, as Jesse Rath did this week.
Speaking of SuperGirl, I want to give a quick shoutout to Nicole Maines who has joined the show as TV’s first transgender superhero, Nia Nal. She shined in this season’s premiere and I think her character is really setting SuperGirl on the right path this season. Here she is talking about what this role means to the trans community:
Tales of the City
Even more queer cast members have been announced for Netflix’s “Tales of the City,” an upcoming series based on Armistead Maupin’s popular novels (and subsequent adaptations). I could list all the amazing queer people involved in this remake but I might run out of space (Hint: it includes Ellen Page and Jen Richards).
Wynonna Earp
Oh, Earpers. You really know how to throw a convention (or multiple). This week in Another-Wynonna-Earp-Convention-That-I-Can’t-Attend, the cast seemed be as angelic as always at Earpapalooza in Minneapolis, MN. The convention is working on uploading full panel videos to their Youtube channel and the “Ladies of Purgatory” panel is worth the watch. I dare you not to cry while Emily Andras says “you’re here and you stay.”
#SpiritDay
Finally, it was Spirit Day this Thursday and some of our favorite shows, actors, and allies stood up to support LGBTQ youth against bullying. As usual, the Wynonna Earp crew showed up strong with this Dom and Kat video and another major fan fundraiser. Isabella Gomez and the Shameless cast wore purple. And, in case you missed seeing her face, Tatiana Maslany also posted about Spirit Day:
I also literally held back a scream when I saw Floriana Lima‘s face pop on my Instagram wearing purple (I’m all about Alex Danvers doing her single thing but I miss Maggie’s face).
And that’s it for my first Queer Beats post! Always thorough, always professional, never random.
Thanks for all the great queer updates, Nikki! I am looking forward to seeing Batwoman, am taking in Black Lightning and Supergirl, and can’t wait for Monday’s Legends. So much to be grateful for in these challenging times. Thanks for including the linked content.
