Queer Beats – July 31, 2020

Queer Beats with Nikki Header

Welcome back to Queer Beats, your weekly one-stop shop for queer television news! This week, Luimelia announced a partial goodbye, while Wynonna Earp and Wayhaught finally returned to us.

Before we begin, be sure to check out Mika’s posts reporting on the recent ComicCon@Home event to hear all about the queer TV happenings from those panels!

Amar Es Para Siempre

I have to be real with y’all… since we last talked on Queer Beats, I have fallen down a VERY BIG spiral into this Spanish telenovela. The show features the couple known as “Luimelia” (or Luisita and Amelia). This couple has made me realize why straight people love telenovelas and soap operas so much. I am FULLY ADDICTED to their drama. I hope to do a full “Guide to Luimelia” one day, so look out for that!

Unfortunately, I didn’t have great timing and today it was announced that the couple will be leaving the show. Thankfully, they are still filming the web series spin-off that focuses on the couple, so we still have that!

If you don’t know Spanish, the basic message here is that, although they are leaving Amar Es Para Siempre, they are still excited to continue telling the Luimelia story in the web series (which will run two more seasons). And no, I can’t discuss the fact that they almost cry at the end of this, because I will also cry.

Both actresses honored the characters on IG as well:

Burden of Truth

Burden of Truth was renewed for a fourth season!

The L Word: Generation Q

Leisha Hailey gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the Pants Podcast and not one bit of this surprised me:

Paper Girls

Paper Girls, a comic book series with a main queer lead, will be coming to Amazon!

Pose

So, the Emmy nominations came out this week. As usual, there has been lots of drama and discussion over who was selected (and, more importantly, who wasn’t). Queer characters were included (such as Zendaya‘s Rue and Linda Cardellini‘s Judy) but, for me, the biggest blind spot comes with the lack of nominations for the cast of Pose. This cast deserves nominations and it’s truly crazy that none of the women on the show were nominated.

^ That’s how I feel about it.

In better news, Trace Lysette, who guest starred on Pose, is set to produce a new docuseries about the trans community in America!

Also, good news from Steven Canals!

Station 19

I’m not personally in this fandom but I can only imagine how happy people are about this news…

Supergirl

In case anyone needs a Sanvers fix…

Utopia Falls

We don’t know what’s happening with a possible season two of this show yet, but the cast continues to grace us with behind-the-scenes content from the first season:

Wynonna Earp

Wynonna Earp (finally) returned last week and, although the show has given us many gifts, one of the best ones is Dominique Provost-Chalkley. She has continued to share her personal journey with the fandom in the most beautiful way:

I mean, how cute is this??

Also, we got a new Kat Barrell interview!

And that’s it for Queer Beats this week! Always thorough, always professional, never random.

About NikkiT

Nikki is an archivist by day, queer TV addict by night. Her first dive into fan content was when she ran a secret Xanga blog dedicated to pictures of Lorelai Gilmore in the 7th grade. She has never looked back.

  • You might be aware but just in case. Luimelia’ s new series is available (out there some how ) and what is more interesting is to see and listen to them discuss the relationship between these characters and specially the love screens, which they wanted to be more ‘real’ as are found with straight lovers on tv

So cool that these straight women have become such great allies

Also, really enjoy your emails and thank you so much for keeping this little old lady up to date

    • Thank you for the reminder about the Luimelia series! I just added it to our database here! It really is great to see two actors so invested in their character’s story.

And thanks for reading along! 🙂
